Text Box: Topic of the Quarter: Planning for Disaster Recovery.
Text Box: Based on our experience, most medical practices DO NOT have a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP). It is critical for all medical practices to be aware of the need for a disaster recovery solution. As you may know, HIPAA requires every medical entity to have a disaster recovery plan to allow a practice to recover patient data in case of a catastrophic event. The most important fact about not having a data disaster recovery plan is that your practice and your patients may be negatively affected by the loss of this data.
We highly recommend that you put in place a disaster recovery plan to ensure your practice can go on after a disaster. This plan should include a process that allows a current back up to be stored off site. There are many options available, including local backup with a tape or disk backup taken off site or a remote backup via Internet where backups are done remotely. If done properly either option is good but should include some kind of validation process.
An office that has implemented Electronic Medical Records, Electronic Document Management and other electronic processes, is better able to implement a DRP because their patient records and documents are electronic. This should be one of the critical reasons a practice should seriously consider taking steps to implement electronic automation.
If you are interested in more information about DRP, call us at IMSC so that you can find out more about how to implement a successful Disaster Data Recovery Plan.
